Step-by-Step Guide to Halq & Taqseer

Male pilgrim in Ihram having his head completely shaved by a barber after completing Umrah in Makkah

1. Rulings on Halq and Taqseer

Completing the haircut is the final compulsory ritual that exits a pilgrim from the sacred state of Ihram.

  • For Male Pilgrims:

    • Shaving the Head (Halq): Completely shaving the entire head is three times more virtuous than shortening/trimming the hair, as praised in the Prophet’s ﷺ supplications.

    • Trimming the Hair (Taqseer): If choosing to trim rather than shave, the hair must be shortened evenly across the entire head, not just cut from selected small patches or the front.

    • Shaving the Entire Head: Partial shaving (leaving parts of the scalp unshaved) is prohibited.

    • Beard Guidelines: Shaving or trimming the beard is strictly impermissible.

  • For Female Pilgrims:

    • Women do not shave their heads.

    • It is sufficient for a woman to gather her hair and cut a small portion (approximately the length of a fingertip / 1 inch) from the ends.

  • Transition out of Ihram:

    • A pilgrim remains strictly bound by all Ihram restrictions until the haircut is fully completed.

    • Once completed, all Ihram restrictions are completely lifted, signaling the successful completion of Umrah.

2. Maintaining Spiritual Focus During Rituals

  • Worldly Speech: Engaging in casual or worldly conversations during Tawaf or Sa‘i does not invalidate the worship, but it significantly diminishes its spiritual reward.

  • Focus on Dhikr: Pilgrims should devote these sacred moments exclusively to remembrance (Dhikr), supplication (Dua), and Quranic recitation.

  • Composure & Dignity: Maintaining calm behavior and emotional presence of mind helps preserve the sanctity of worship.

Purpose of the Rituals:

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“Tawaf around the House, Sa‘i between As-Safa and Al-Marwah, and the stoning of the Jamarat were only prescribed so that the remembrance of Allah may be established.”

— Sunan Ibn Majah

3. Categories of Mistakes & Adherence to the Sunnah

When pilgrims fall into errors during Hajj and Umrah, they generally fall into one of three categories:

  1. The Ignorant (Jahil): Those who break a rule unaware of its prohibition; there is hope that Allah excuses them due to lack of knowledge.

  2. The Deliberately Misguided: Those who knowingly deviate or teach incorrect practices; they carry the burden of their own sin and the sins of those who follow them.

  3. The Negligent (Muqassir): Those who fail to seek knowledge or ask scholars when uncertain, risking sin through sheer carelessness.

Final Reflection:

Islamic worship is not governed by personal emotions or subjective preferences, but strictly by what has been authentically transmitted from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. We ask Allah to guide all pilgrims to perform their Umrah in full conformity with the authentic Sunnah.
