Many pilgrims unintentionally make mistakes while performing the rituals of Hajj and Umrah. To ensure our worship is accepted, these errors must be avoided. The most perfect guidance is that of our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who instructed:

“Take your rituals from me.”

Below is a concise guide to the common mistakes pilgrims should avoid:

Errors Related to Ihram & Talbiyah

  • Unnecessary Exposure of the Shoulder (Idtiba’): Keeping the right shoulder uncovered throughout the entire duration of Ihram. Exposure of the right shoulder is prescribed only during Tawaf al-Qudoom (or Umrah Tawaf).

  • Neglecting the Talbiyah: Failing to recite the Talbiyah loudly (for men) or omitting it altogether after entering Ihram, as well as while in Mina and Muzdalifah.

  • Group Recitation of Talbiyah: Reciting the Talbiyah in unison behind a designated leader instead of individually.

Errors During Tawaf & Visiting al-Masjid al-Haram

  • Inventing Specific Supplications: Introducing fabricated or unproven duas upon entering the Grand Mosque or upon seeing the Holy Kaaba.

  • Assigning Fixed Duas per Circuit: Designating specific prayers or supplications to each particular round of Tawaf or Sa’ee.

  • Loud Group Supplications: Reciting prayers loudly in groups, which creates noise and distracts other worshipers performing Tawaf.

  • Misconceptions Regarding the Black Stone & Kaaba:

    • Pushing, shoving, or causing harm to others just to kiss the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad).

    • Believing that the Black Stone holds inherent power to benefit or harm on its own.

    • Touching or wiping against parts of the Kaaba other than the Black Stone and the Yemeni Corner.

    • Kissing the Yemeni Corner (Rukn al-Yamani), whereas the Sunnah is only to touch it if possible.

  • Performing Tawaf Inside the Hijr Ismail: Walking inside the semi-circular wall (Hateem / Hijr Ismail) during Tawaf, which invalidates the circuit since the Hijr is part of the Kaaba itself.

Errors During Sa’ee (Safa & Marwa)

  • Pointing Towards the Kaaba on Safa: Gesturing towards the Kaaba as if starting Takbeer for prayer when climbing Mount Safa.

  • Fast Walking (Raml) by Women: Women running or moving rapidly between the two green markers, an act intended strictly for men.

  • Miscounting the Circuits of Sa’ee: Misunderstanding one round as going from Safa to Marwa and returning to Safa. In reality, each leg from Safa to Marwa is one full round, and Marwa back to Safa is the second round.

Errors Regarding Shaving/Trimming Hair & Grooming

  • Uneven Hair Trimming: Shaving or cutting only certain patches of hair on the head while leaving other sections untouched.

  • Shaving the Beard: Shaving the beard on Eid day under the belief that it is a form of grooming or ornamentation.

Errors at Arafah & Muzdalifah

  • Facing the Wrong Direction During Dua: Failing to face the Qibla while supplicating in Arafah.

  • Insisting on Climbing Mount Arafah: Believing it is necessary to climb Jabal ar-Rahmah (Mount Arafah) for supplication or Wuquf.

  • Focusing on Departure Over Dua: Rushing to leave Arafah early instead of maximizing supplications during these sacred, blessed hours.

  • Misconceptions About Pebbles in Muzdalifah: Believing that pebbles for pelting must be collected from Muzdalifah or that they must be washed before use.

  • Flawed Prayer Execution in Muzdalifah: Performing Maghrib and Isha in Muzdalifah without verifying the correct direction of the Qibla.

  • Premature Departure from Muzdalifah: Leaving Muzdalifah before midnight without a valid excuse, thereby missing the obligatory overnight stay.

Errors During Pelting the Jamarat

  • Delegating Without Valid Need: Able-bodied pilgrims appointing others to pelt on their behalf (proxy pelting is permitted only for the sick, weak, elderly, or incapacitated).

  • Using Incorrect Items to Pelt: Throwing shoes, sandals, or large rocks instead of small pebbles.

  • Pelting Out of Sequence: Throwing pebbles at the Jamarat pillars in the wrong order.

  • Throwing Pebbles Simultaneously: Casting all seven pebbles at once in a single throw instead of tossing them individually one after another.

  • Omitting Supplications: Failing to step aside and make Dua after pelting the Small and Middle Jamarat.

Errors Regarding Sacrifice, Timing & Departure

  • Sacrificing Unqualified Animals: Slaughtering sacrificial animals (Hadi) that do not meet the minimum age requirements prescribed by Islamic law.

  • Wasting Sacred Time: Spending the precious hours in Arafah, Mina, and the nights of Tashreeq in idle talk or unnecessary activity.

  • Unnecessary Shortening/Combining in Mina: Shortening and combining prayers unnecessarily while staying in Mina, when the Sunnah is to shorten prayers to two rak’ats but perform each prayer at its designated time.

  • Performing Farewell Tawaf Early: Completing Tawaf Al-Wada’ before finishing the pelting ritual at the Jamarat.

  • Staying On in Makkah After Farewell Tawaf: Remaining in Makkah for non-essential reasons or shopping after performing Tawaf Al-Wada’.

  • Incorrect Intention for Visiting Madinah: Making the primary intention of the trip to visit the grave of the Prophet ﷺ rather than visiting al-Masjid an-Nabawi itself.
