Explanation
Al-Quddus is derived from the root letters qaf-dal-seen, which is quds, and appears twice in the Qur’an. The word quds has several Arabic meanings, including being pure, clean, and spotless, being far removed from impurity or imperfection, and being Holy and sacred.
According to Ibnul Qayyim, Al-Quddus means “the One who is free from and above all sharr (evil), naqs (deficiency), and ‘ayb” (fault). He is The Pure One, devoid of any flaws or deficiencies.
According to Al Bayhaqi, Al-Quddus is Taahir (Pure), and Uluww (High).
ALLAH سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ, as the name “Al-Quddus” implies, is absolutely pure and devoid of any imperfection or flaw. This name reminds believers that ALLAH سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ is the source of all purity, goodness, and perfection and that He is impure or corruptible in any way.
The concept of purity is inextricably linked to the concept of divine unity (Tawhid). Believers are reminded that ALLAH سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ is the only source of purity and that anything or anyone else worshipped or revered in addition to Him is impure and flawed.
The name “Al-Quddus” refers to one of ALLAH سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ most important attributes in Islam: His absolute purity and perfection. This name reminds believers that ALLAH سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ is the source of all purity, goodness, and perfection.
