Explanation
From the very core ha-mim-nun (ه م ن), which has the classical Arabic multiple meanings of watching over, overseeing, protecting, guarding, being a witness, offering security and peace, determining what is true, and extending a wing. The Arabic phrase haymana al-ta’ir alafirdkhih means that the bird took its young under its wings.
ALLAHسُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ is Al Muhaymin, The Watcher, The Protector, which means that ALLAHسُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ is the Guardian over His creation, keeping watch over everything that happens in it. He is observing everyone’s movements. He knows what is harmful and what is beneficial to us because He is watching over us.
Another meaning of the name is The One In-Charge or the One Who is in charge of something, the One Who has authority over it. Everyone and everything is dependent on Him, and He manages all affairs with ease. Another meaning of this name is The Giver of Just Recompense, or the One who does not deprive obedient servants of their full reward, nor punishes sinners with more than they deserve.
The name Al-Muhaymin refers to His supreme nature as the guardian or absolute authority. Because he is the superseder, nothing can overtake or usurp Him. He is ever-vigilant, seeing what is hidden in the hearts as well as what is visible on the surface. Nothing can be hidden from Him.
“He knows what is in the heavens and the earth, and knows what you conceal and what you disclose. ALLAH even Knows what lies hidden in the breasts of people”
(Quran 64:4)
Variants of the word muhaymin, such as muhaiminan, can also be discovered in Surah Maidah, where Allah declares the Qur’an to be the book that will be protected above all others.
“Then We revealed the Book to you (O Muhammad ﷺ) with Truth, confirming whatever of the Book was revealed before, and protecting and guarding over it”
(Quran 5:48)
The name “Al-Muhaymin” reflects one of ALLAHسُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ most important attributes in Islam: He guards and protects His creation, and He is the ultimate source of security and safety in the universe. Al-Muhaymin reminds believers to seek refuge in ALLAHسُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ and to place their trust in Him for protection, which is necessary for achieving true security and peace.
